Old R&B Music

R&B music was everywhere in the 70s. There were the Motown artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and the Commodores. There were the funk bands like Parliament Funkadelic and Sly and the Family Stone. And there also was the disco/funk artists like Earth Wind and Fire and Chic. In the 80s and 90s, Contemporary R&B Music took over, with artists like Michael & Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey leading the way. During the 90s new sub-genres of R&B Music found a foot hold integrating R&B and Rap. Hip Hop Soul merged traditional R&B with Hip Hop inspired backing tracks. Mary J. Blige and Aaliyah were leading artists in this style. New Jack Swing fused the rhythms, samples, and production techniques of hip-hop with the contemporary sound of R&B Music. Babyface, Bell Biv DeVoe, and Tony! Toni! Toné! are examples of artists that performed this type of sound.
